8 Reasons Why Your Fridge Isn’t Cooling

  • The temperature control setting isn’t right.
  • The condenser coils are filled with dust.
  • The interior is overloaded.
  • The fridge is situated in a poor spot.
  • The condenser fan motor isn’t working.
  • The start relay is faulty.

8 Fixes to get a Fridge That is Not Cooling

1. The temperature control setting is wrong.

Uh-oh, did something bulge into your fever control panel? Prior to doing anything else, check this first. Move it to a cool setting, and hopefully that will do just fine.

2. The condenser coils are full of dust.

If you have been neglecting your condenser coils, you’ll want to wash them ASAP. When dust collects them on, the coils are unable to control the fridge’s interior temperature correctly. Happily, fixing this issue is as easy as dusting. Locate your appliance’s condenser coils – they are typically in the trunk or on the bottom of the refrigerator – and then use a brush to get rid of dust. (They make a particular brush just for this purpose.) To help keep your fridge running easily, our pros recommend you wash the coils a couple of times a year.

3. The gaskets need to be replaced.

With the years, the seals around the doors of the fridge, known as gaskets, suffer from tear and wear. While this happens, they don’t seal as well as they should, causing the fridge to flow cool atmosphere. Check to see if your gaskets have some cracks or rips or are loose. If so, you’ll want to have someone come out and replace them.

4. The inside is overloaded.

When’s the last time you cleaned out all those leftovers? If you can’t recall, it’s time to do a purge and throw whatever’s looking a bit suspect. Overloaded fridges can’t circulate cool air correctly, and there’s also a risk that items on your refrigerator could be obstructing the cold air compressor.

5. The fridge is situated in a bad spot.

The room environment where the refrigerator is placed can impact its thermometer. If the area is too cold, like, say, your next refrigerator in the garage, it may shut off since the appliance thinks it’s up to temp. If the area is too hot, it could run constantly.

6. The condenser fan motor is not working.

That is where we get into some of the more serious issues. The condenser fan motor is accountable for cool air circulation, and when neither your refrigerator nor freezer is cooling properly, it’s a probable culprit. You will want a tech to come out to fix this.

7. The evaporator fan motor is broken.

If your refrigerator is not cooling your freezer seems just fine, a faulty evaporator fan might be the reason. A fridge that moans and groans like a grumpy old man is another hint that you might have a broken fan.

8. The start relay is faulty.

Remove the relay and check to make sure the connection isn’t fried by shaking it.

When there are a number of problems you may try tackling yourself, if your refrigerator still isn’t keeping your food cool enough, you’ll want to call for a refrigerator repair service right away.
